Our Gingerbread house
We have a family tradition that every year at Christmas time we make a gingerbread house and it sits in the middle of our kitchen table all through Dec. This is the first year that anyone has show any interest in helping me to make the gingerbread house.
Making a gingerbread house is never as easy as it seems! Here's how it goes.
The Mission is to turn this... into something cute with a good enough foundation to stand on it's own.
MeetChallange. Construction worker number 1 (she's cute but watch out she's fast! And she has stealing candy and knocking down gingerbread walls down to a science! Trust me I speak from experience)
MeetChallange construction worker number two. He is fun and can be far more helpful than helper number one but he has been known to have lots of energy and often wants to do every thing and all things :)
Well together my helpers and I worked and worked and worked. Sadly I used a different Royal icing recipe this year and it's one that I"ll never use again. It was so stiff and so hard I could hardly push it out of the icing bag! Next year it's mom's recipe all the way, it's much easier to use and makes for a happier foreman of the Gingerbread project.
But we worked hard, sometimes at building and sometimes at keeping the helpers happy and sometimes at keeping helper number 1 from eating all the construction supplies! And in the end this is what we got.
Our little house does not look as "profession" as it has the last 3 years, but this year I had helpers and I think that is far more important that have a "perfect" house :) I think they did a great job!

Hello my friend!
ReplyDeleteYou're house is beautiful!
I am throwing a Giant Gingerbread Man Build-Off for my family and need some advice from the best chef I know...How do you make good icing for decorating these guys? I have a great gingerbread recipe and in the past when I've done this activity with my kids at Promise, I've just used white icing from the store and colored it...but it gets so melty and messy. If you'd be willing to share a recipe with me, I'd truly appreciate it!
Also, we all need to get together soon! Perhaps between Christmas and New Years?
Love ya!
